The green stripe represents the land and the ancestors buried within it. The yellow disk represents the sun. The black traditional Kanak roof spire (flèche faîtière) symbolizes the ancestors and the traditional Kanak house (case), representing Kanak identity and culture.

Legal DescriptionThe Kanak flag, originally adopted by the FLNKS in 1980, was granted semi-official status by the government of New Caledonia on 13 July 2010. It is flown alongside the French national flag, which remains the sole official national flag of the territory.

Description

The Kanak flag of New Caledonia features three horizontal stripes of blue (top), red (middle), and green (bottom). On the hoist side, a yellow disk is placed, slightly overlapping the blue and red stripes, containing a black traditional Kanak roof spire (flèche faîtière).
