The armillary sphere, a navigational instrument, signifies the Age of Discovery and Portugal's historical role as a maritime power. The Portuguese shield, placed on the armillary sphere, contains five blue escutcheons (quinas) with five white bezants each, representing the five Moorish kings defeated by Afonso Henriques and the five wounds of Christ.
